Chartreuse and Chambray

I feel so very Audrey-Hepburn-meets-Taylor-Swift in this outfit. OMG CAN YOU IMAGINE if Audrey Hepburn met Taylor Swift? Mind. Blown. Cannot even fathom.
But seriously, remember these Audrey Hepburn outfits? NAILED. IT.
Anyway, I’m getting off track. A sliver of midriff showing just makes me all cuh-ra-zay apparently. Even if it’s a totally demure sliver in just the front.
One of the weird things about grief is that I’ve been able to wear all of my “just barely fits” items and So this lovely skirt of mine, with it’s beautiful pleats, gets to come play in the sun (and rain. if you follow me on snapchat:goodgirlstyle you’ll notice I got totally soaked in an unexpected downpour, sigh!).
Of course the accessories of the summer over here are my gladiator sandals (Sam&Libby) and my wood watch (JORD).
Add in some vintage earrings and some awesome Betsey Johnson sunnies and I’m all set.
I’m determined to make the best of the rest of summer.

Movie Style: Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday

Princess Anne, played by Audrey Hepburn, escapes her royal guards and spends the day cavorting around Rome in the classic Hollywood black-and-white movie, “Roman Holiday.” It’s one of my favorites, and it’s currently available on Netflix.

 The iconic “Princess on Holiday” outfit still works today, because all of its elements are classic pieces for an elegant wardrobe. Here are some ideas for how to recreate this look for everyday wear or for something a bit more special. This also makes a great Halloween costume, probably with items you already own.

The elements are simple, but the look comes together to look fresh and vibrant. The canvas of a plain white oxford gains personality from the sleeves being rolled and the collar popped.

Of course a smile and bright red lips are necessary accoutrements, because, as Audrey herself says, “Happy girls are the prettiest.” And I quite agree. Then, you’ll need some Roman sandals, the very first thing Princess Anne purchases on her day of freedom in the movie.

The full midi skirt is making a comeback, perfect for this “Roman Holiday” style. Be sure to find one with a belt or add a belt after. Here are some examples…

Roman Holiday Full Skirts with BeltsLong midi skirt / Red skirt / Brown skirt / Gucci high waisted skirt / Cameo Rose brown skirt / Golden Goose circle skirt

That’s all that is required for this easy and delightful style. But I’m always up for a variation on a theme, so I took the Princess-off-duty look and transformed it into a Princess-ON-duty look, suitable for a fancy occasion. The elements are similar, but the fabrics and details have been elevated. Of course, rolled sleeves and a popped collar will add to the effect here, too.

Audrey Style

Oh this dress is just a happy cream-puff of a vintage-style shift! I ADORE it wholeheartedly.

Topped with “frosting” hair, as I call it…and big old sunglasses, of course! I just didn’t have them on for the pictures (oops).

Oooo, so much fun. I’m also reading this book:

Until later, my darlings!

Wearing Hats: A Series {Part 1}

I’m very excited to share a series with you this week about wearing hats, vintage & new. Before I begin sharing my own outfits incorporating vintage hats, I thought, we need to see some inspiration. Don’t you think?
Jackie Kennedy’s iconic look included many hats. She was especially well-known for the pillbox style {center}
Any hat that Audrey Hepburn put on instantly became sculpture. WOW!

There have been a handful of vintage hats on Mad Men. I adore Rachel’s simple brown hat she wears on the train {top left}. Rachel Menken’s purple feathery creation is one of a kind! Christina Hendricks wore several very stunning hats in the photoshoot for LA {bottom right}
But really, who does hats better than the British royals? No one.
Queen Elizabeth II is so beautiful. I just love her cheerful spirit and colors. Always wearing a hat, and always smiling.
Sophie, Countess of Wessex…love her hat & capelet

This is such an incredible photo of Princess Diana. That hat, the colors! Everything about it is stunning.
And, of course, the world’s newest darling, Princess Kate. I’ll forever call her that because it’s so endearing and I feel it suits her. She’s the Jackie Kennedy of our generation, I do think. Goodness she looks amazing in anything, and always happy and carefree {albeit skinny}.
I love rocking hats. I dearly love collecting them AND wearing them, and can hardly wait to start showing you a few from my own collection. Aren’t you pining for gorgeous hats now?

Roman Holiday

Remember when I recommended some movie/snack pairings for rainy days? While, it’s raining again. I should say, still, since we had approximately 48 minutes of sunshine combined over the weekend and today.
So I’ll wear a Roman Holiday of an outfit…silk skirt with scenes of Italy, vintage basket-weave purse, bow belt…and that oughtta bring another 4 minutes of sunshine, don’t you think?
Have a great day!
