The Learning Curve

It’s Back to School time!

So here I am wearing a “teacher outfit” and my herringbone blazer, always the first thing I pull out when Fall comes around.
Fall always brings its own learning curve, I find, whether or not you’re going back to school. We’ve all got to buckle down a bit, find a new routine, work on those New Year’s Resolutions that went by the wayside and somehow find their way into our guilty conscious again come September…
So many people in my life are starting new jobs, new degree programs, and new adventures. I have my own set of mountains to climb this fall.
But all good things. We must always be learning in order to keep growing and moving. Once we stop learning, we’re in trouble for sure! And I don’t know about you, but I always try to avoid detention 🙂

How We Feelin’?

I’m feelin’ like this song and this song on repeat.
I’m feelin’ like short boots and a short dress.
I’m feelin’ like the weekend better get here soon.
I’m feelin’ like eating 1/3 of a loaf of banana bread for breakfast is totally legit.
I’m feelin’ like somehow this blend of the end of a bunch of bags of different coffees made the best iced coffee ever.
I’m feelin’ like these words from a friend are so important to my heart lately:
Jesus + Nothing = ENOUGH
Amen, right?
And I’m feelin’ excited to announce the winner of the KIND giveaway (drumroll please):
Amy Wetzel! Amy, please email me! (goodgirlstyleblog at gmail dot com). Woot!

Chartreuse and Houndstooth

There’s this little secret to happiness, and it’s not a good one. I mean, it’s good, because it means happiness. But it isn’t good in the way you’re thinking, considering I usually think in terms of pink pants or leopard print cupcake wrappers, because this is a little bit of hard-work happiness.

The kind of soul-weary-but-I’m-still-smiling happy. Deep-reserve-of-love sorta happy.
Able-to-give-happily-and-without-any-impulse-to-hold-on-to-things-myself happy.
It’s good stuff.
Hard to come by.

Because it comes with a price.
The price of our pride.

The secret to that kind of deep happiness?
Submission.

I just whispered that, because it’s a tough word to say. A tough word to swallow.
A tough word to live.
It is a strange paradox that submission gives us freedom.
And freedom in Christ?
That’s some crazy-deep-happiness.

Be blessed, friends.

Casual Sequins: Oxymoron?

My friend told me I don’t wear jeans very often.
Regular old blue jeans, as opposed to colored denim, because we all know I love my hot pink jeans! I guess it’s true…I’m a skirt and dress sorta girl. That, or yoga pants and one of my many sweatshirts. But you don’t need to see that.
My mom gave me this top for Christmas. My brother (again with my brother  nick-naming my outfits/clothing, right? This was my lot in life growing up) calls this the “mermaid top.” I think I rather agree this time! The paillettes are a beautiful matte blue-green, but when the light hits them, they shine and come alive.

I wanted to try wearing this top in a wearable way. A “Hey, this Mermaid top isn’t so scary!” way. So I pulled out the old blue jeans. For some texture contrast, I added my velvet riding jacket and my gray suede pumps. Since the top is rather statement-y, I kept my makeup and jewelry very simple. Just a few coats of mascara and this wonderful Pomegranate-Fig Lip Butter I received in a gifted Birchbox, and it was a particularly good hair day thanks to another goodie from my Birchbox. Have you joined Birchbox? It’s totally fun…they send you designer beauty samples every month. You can join here! For jewelry, just some simple studs and my favorite rings. If your office lets you wear jeans on Casual Friday, I think this would be the perfect outfit. Take off the jacket, change the heels, add a bit more makeup, and you could head out for a party afterwards!
This Missoni bag is my absolute favorite winter purse. It’s a consignment store steal, considering it was under $20 and it retails for nearly $500. Tomorrow I’ll show you my purse & travel essentials featuring the uber-awesome GoToobs from HumanGear.
Also, I’ve been reading these amazing blog posts about picking the perfect jeans for your figure. Considering they don’t make my favorite brand of jeans (what I’m wearing above, Blue Cult) anymore (I don’t think…if you know otherwise, please let me know!), I’ll need these tips soon enough. Thanks, Rachel!

Pink Polka Dots

I’ve been lapping up every second of this November sunshine. Just sitting in the window like a cat, keeping it open a crack to get the crisp air inside. I soak in the sunshine and store it away for the days that are gray.

This skirt is like a big security blanket.
I’ve thrown it on with boots to return a movie right at the strike of the 9pm return deadline, I’ve worn it out in the rain to get Chinese food well past a decent dinner hour, and I’ve worn it to work and church. You’ve seen me throw the bottom hem up in a knot because I will admit it IS a tripping hazard. Which for me is life-threatening since I’m just a bit clumsy.

Here I paired it with pearl earrings to mimic the polka dots, a pink polka dot tee, and my polka dot sleeve blazer. Then I threw on my new favorite blingy-bling ring. Bam. This ring practically walks into the room before I do.

Before I trip on my skirt and fall into the room, that is.
One of these days, no doubt.

Go-Getter

Some days, you have to get up, get dressed, and go make something happen.

Or, at the very least, get a cup of coffee in a hot pink cup that really makes you smile.

And by “get dressed” I mean…borrow clothes from my mom. Let’s not discuss how much I want to “permanently borrow” this gingham shirt of hers.

I have to say, I had a really great day while wearing this outfit, and while I didn’t necessarily “go get” anything super awesome today, at least I tried. Points, right?

Textures

This outfit is jam-packed with texture. A metal necklace, a silk shirt, a cotton scarf, a tweed jacket, corduroys, and suede wedges.

I’ve been thinking today how God sometimes takes things from us for a season.
Our God who gives and takes.
Do you know what I mean?

Sometimes God says, “Here, you know what? We’re going to take this thing and put it on the shelf for a bit. Let’s focus on something else for a little while.”
This feels so scary. It feels very unsettling.
But the cool thing is, our God is a detail-oriented God.
And oftentimes, He takes things we thought got shelved, and He works them back into our lives in the coolest ways.
You know, He works them together like mixing different textures. It may sound silly, but its true…He puts together our lives with the finesse of a God who cares about the details. A God who cares about the beautiful big picture.
Oh I just love that.

I Have No Words for A Title

Legit talking to my neighbor.
Blazer collar legit popped.

Overeager camera face.

Slightly more normal.

See the color flecks in the blazer? Love.
I’ve been so busy lately preparing for my move and working on a few other projects.
I cleared my desk at work today.
Just a phone, box of tissues, message book, and stapler remained and I packed up my favorite mug, my bowl of chocolates, my robin’s egg blue desk accessories.
I think I’ve gone and packed up all of my words tonight, too, because I can’t find many.

Mint Jeans & Teenage Years

It’s only Tuesday? I feel like it’s been an awesome, busy week so far. Good effort everyone. I call an early weekend, ok? Aaaaaaaaand cue the movie marathon and ice cream sundaes.
Ok, so maybe it doesn’t actually work that way. Drat.
Today was rainy, rainy, rainy. Rainy. (photos from a few days ago) And the Lord was gracious enough to bless me with a rather cheerful attitude for the day. Don’t you love that? Love it.
Sometimes, I try to reclaim my teenage years, and I use sky blue eyeliner. Can you see it? So much fun, and I love the way it catches the light.
Until next time! Chins up, my dears!
xo,

Velvet Blazer

I remembered this velvet blazer just in the knick of time. I wanted to be sure to get a wear in before the weather turns warm again. And let me tell you, the day I wore this it was NOT warm. But I love the heavy velvet mixed with a spring-like color combination.
