Birthday Dress

It was kinda-totally my birthday a few weeks ago!
#checkyes

We had lots of beautiful birthday snow, I made my trademark birthday coffee cake, wore a hot pink birthday crown, shared my birthday with a few other ladies from my church with the SAME birthday, had pink champagne and chocolate-hazelnut cake, received pink flowers, and all-around felt like the most-loved girl there is!

{birthday flowers!}

I love this swingy “Cream Puff” dress as I call it, with my “Cupcake Frosting” hair. Obviously I wanted to dress like desserts on my birthday! Ha!
{birthday manicure}
I also love the high-low of this outfit…the jacket and shoes are crazy-expensive, but the tights are from Big Lots, the sweater is from a tag sale, and the dress is from a consignment shop and doesn’t have a label.
It’s just like happiness, y’know? Find happiness in the small things and the big things. I was never a huge fan of my winter birthday so close to Christmas (someone was always sick, we weren’t in school yet so I missed the fun of a classroom birthday, I wanted an outdoor party, everyone was burnt out from Christmas and stretched thin and presents came in Christmas paper, etc. etc.). So I’ve created my own traditions. Little things.

{hazelnut-orange GF cake and pink champagne}

I choose a birthday song every year, pick up some pink champagne, and always bake a coffee cake on the morning of my birthday and put candles in it.
 (those links will take you to past birthday posts of mine for more pretty fun!)

Here’s this year’s birthday song:

An outfit doesn’t have to be all high-end designers. And a birthday doesn’t have to be all bells and whistles.
Find joy in the little things, the unique things, and I think you’ll find extra joy you didn’t know was there.

And Happy Birthday to all you other near-Christmas/winter babies!
🙂

Cheetah & A Monogram

Today I have a little cream box to share with you.
I think you’re gonna like what’s inside.

Monogram Necklaces (Ads)
A beautiful monogram necklace from ONecklace.com 🙂
When they offered to let me review a custom monogram necklace, I had to try it. I mean, we see them on Pinterest all the time, right?
Now I know why they are so popular. I LOVE this necklace. I’m not generally a gold-jewelry girl, so I took the opportunity to try gold, rather than silver.

I’ve been wearing it every day! I love it with fall and winter colors: brown, wine, navy. And cheetah. Obviously.
(also obviously: these photos are from fall! ha!)

I also wore it with this fancy-fancy dress to a concert:

I really, really love this necklace and wear it almost daily. It isn’t the most high-quality jewelry in the world, but it’s a great gift or gift-to-self (Valentine’s Day?).

Sunny & Seventies

That title’s a play on words. Since it’s been in the 70s all week, gorgeous and lovely, I decided to go with a 70s-themed outfit.
Because everyone matches the theme of their outfit to the weather, right?
{no?}

Big hat, big sunnies, big hair, big sleeves. Higher-waisted jeans.
I really would have loved being a 20-something in the 70s, I have no doubt.
I’m sure I could rock gold lame and Disco Fever.

I wonder what this decade’s (the teens) defining characteristics will be. What do you think?
Modern Luxe or Hipster Grunge?

For a Story

Because it’s Saturday night and my work week is over.

Because the light in Florida was kickin’.
{disclaimer: I have no idea what kickin’ means, but it sounds good}

Because hot pink and black are so very “Natalie.”
Because this outfit reminds me of a story.
Which reminds me that we are all here, all living life, all trying to find stories.
Happy story-making weekend, friends. Enjoy!

How We Feelin’?

I’m feelin’ like this song and this song on repeat.
I’m feelin’ like short boots and a short dress.
I’m feelin’ like the weekend better get here soon.
I’m feelin’ like eating 1/3 of a loaf of banana bread for breakfast is totally legit.
I’m feelin’ like somehow this blend of the end of a bunch of bags of different coffees made the best iced coffee ever.
I’m feelin’ like these words from a friend are so important to my heart lately:
Jesus + Nothing = ENOUGH
Amen, right?
And I’m feelin’ excited to announce the winner of the KIND giveaway (drumroll please):
Amy Wetzel! Amy, please email me! (goodgirlstyleblog at gmail dot com). Woot!

Meet Blowfish Shoes

New favorite shoes alert. But first: a story.
I once had a pair of white and cork heels that I got compliments on every.single.time I wore them. And wear them, I did, until they were completely unwearable, unrepairable, and I tearily said goodbye to them (is tearily not a word?).
Sad story, right?
Nope.
Becaaaaaauuuuussseeeee…look what I found!
I know this will be my new compliments-all-the-time can’t-stop-wearing-em shoe. The Illi Wedge in Faux Straw is just seriously amazingly beautiful, comfortable, and best of all: affordable from Blowfish Shoes.
A perfect wedge, just like the kind Duchess Kate likes to wear.
The perfect summer shoe, to go with any summer dress.
The cutest little almond toe shape with a little toe-box pleat.
A really soft interior that’s an amazing shade of blue.
And a real rubber sole to keep me from slipping during summer adventures.
Seriously, I’m in love.

I hope you all know I only ever talk about things I really am crazy about. And these shoes? Crazy about ’em.
Also lovin’ on this beautiful linen Tibi dress, but that’s playing second fiddle to these straw shoes.
{I also just like to say my straw shoes. Giggle.}

Blowfish Shoes has got it down. Great shoes, great customer service, great attention to detail.

Not to mention…they’re generous too! Giveaway time tomorrow, friends! Stay tuned 😉

Chambray Confession

You know how sometimes, everyone has something, so you resist getting one for no good reason other than principle? And then it goes on crazy-sale at J.Crew and you decide to just test the waters and see why everyone was going so crazy. And the minute you slip on the chambray shirt, you get it
Totally not talking about myself here.
Ahem.

Well, no matter. I jumped on the chambray shirt bandwagon, my friends, and boy am I sure glad! I have no doubt you’ll be seeing this shirt a lot. And if you might have happened to be like me, uneasy about why everyone was going crazy over a denim shirt, don’t worry. It’s absolutely wonderful, I promise.

And while I’m reppin’ J.Crew just ’cause, this outfit definitely reminds me of something out of their catalogue. Stripes, chambray, glasses, a giant cocktail ring, ankle-zip cords, and bright blue suede pumps?
That has J.Crew-bandwagon written allllllll over it.

Bubbles

A casual outfit for watching the football game and playing games with my fam on Sunday afternoon.

Pizza, chocolate, and Trivial Pursuit?
I’m SO THERE.

I also tried this fun “bubble ponytail” and I’m kind of in love with its cute, fun vibe.
Also: Hershey’s milk chocolate nuggets with toffee and almonds are the most addicting things on the planet.
And they look super-luxe in their gold wrappers in a pretty bowl for the holidays.
{As IF they would last long enough to ever make it into a pretty bowl. Ha!}

What are the Odds?

What are the odds that this skirt and this shirt are in almost-exactly the same shade of chartreuse? One is a bit shinier than the other, but otherwise, I could be wearing a dress, don’t you think? They were bought years apart, one from a thrift store, one from a tag sale…one is a Japanese brand and the other is a modern boutique-y brand. Love it.
{leggings underneath to keep nice and toasty & covered when the wind blows}
What are the odds that is was 60-something degrees this mid-November day?
Slim but glorious.
What are the odds that my whole entire family moved back to the same area within a few weeks?
Crazy but true.
What are the odds that tomorrow I’m making a Mile High Pumpkin Pecan Pie for Thanksgiving?
Very, very high.
What are the odds I will resist the temptation to eat a sliver of that pie until Thursday afternoon?
Mmm…. negligible.

What are the odds that I have no idea what sort of face I’m making in that photo above, that I got another cold, that I had practically a million cups of tea today, that I ate lunch at 3:30, and that I am crazy-excited to watch The Voice tonight?
All extremely high.
🙂

Polka Dots, Zig Zags and Daisies

The sun was out yesterday.
You know, after it was snowing/raining and before there were tornadoes and then it snowed again.

Minnesota, whatchyou doin’?
Calm this crazy weather down, will ya?

{Zig-Zag tights! The best!}

{Daisy Baubles! Also the best!}
But when the weather gets crazy, the outfits get crazy!
Mixing polka dots with zig-zags and daisies.
That I like! Those are good things.
🙂
