A Green Trench Coat

002
I hate to say it, but it’s starting to get a little chilly around the edges of the days now. Really I don’t mind one bit, because I’m a layers-girl. Layers give so much additional visual interest to an outfit, especially the opportunity for a texture switch, which I love.

This green shortie trench coat (trench. coat. green. short. just making sure you got that) has been in my closet for awhile, but I wasn’t sure how to wear it. The cut is odd with jeans and a top and it’s a heavy piece that can overwhelm other floaty dresses. Luckily, this thick textured dress from Tibi was the perfect foil. The cinched waist (isn’t this such a fun vintage belt?) creates just the right resting spot for the short jacket.

This outfit would transition well into fall…can’t you see it with my knee-high blue suede boots? But since it’s still summer, I’ll keep wearing my summer faves: my basket-weave Blowfish Shoes wedges.
Do you have a piece lingering in your closet that you aren’t sure how to wear?
Let me hear about it and maybe we can come up with some ideas for it!

Meet Blowfish Shoes

New favorite shoes alert. But first: a story.
I once had a pair of white and cork heels that I got compliments on every.single.time I wore them. And wear them, I did, until they were completely unwearable, unrepairable, and I tearily said goodbye to them (is tearily not a word?).
Sad story, right?
Nope.
Becaaaaaauuuuussseeeee…look what I found!
I know this will be my new compliments-all-the-time can’t-stop-wearing-em shoe. The Illi Wedge in Faux Straw is just seriously amazingly beautiful, comfortable, and best of all: affordable from Blowfish Shoes.
A perfect wedge, just like the kind Duchess Kate likes to wear.
The perfect summer shoe, to go with any summer dress.
The cutest little almond toe shape with a little toe-box pleat.
A really soft interior that’s an amazing shade of blue.
And a real rubber sole to keep me from slipping during summer adventures.
Seriously, I’m in love.

I hope you all know I only ever talk about things I really am crazy about. And these shoes? Crazy about ’em.
Also lovin’ on this beautiful linen Tibi dress, but that’s playing second fiddle to these straw shoes.
{I also just like to say my straw shoes. Giggle.}

Blowfish Shoes has got it down. Great shoes, great customer service, great attention to detail.

Not to mention…they’re generous too! Giveaway time tomorrow, friends! Stay tuned 😉

Blessed & Grateful

{Thanksgiving outfit! Navy lace, mint cords, pearls, hair bow, smiles. Not sure why I didn’t zip my ankle zips. I just never got around to it.}
I keep trying to write something meaningful and poignant about Thanksgiving this year.
I’m a writer. I’m a poet.
Expressing feelings in words is what I do.
And yet, this year, with my heart so full, I can’t think of anything that doesn’t sound sappy.
Trouble is, all of the cliche things are true.
I am grateful. My heart is utterly thankful and blessed and worshipful.
I am thinking of those who have passed away, who aren’t with us, who are far away, who are fighting for our country, or who are facing trials & tribulations far beyond what I can imagine this holiday season.
I truly am on the verge of tears thinking of those things.
It feels so much easier to just talk about pumpkin pie and discount codes because those are safer.
We don’t have to be vulnerable or honest to think about those things. We can joke about them easily. And I made my fair share of jokes this Thanksgiving, to be sure!
But my heart feels so much more, and sometimes it’s hard to find the room to vocalize it or express it.
My family isn’t really much of the share-your-heart type. We’re definitely the pie-joke type.
Except on a day like Thanksgiving, I really want to share the deeper heart-things of life.  Maybe that only comes the day after, full of pumpkin pie, having used up all of the turkey jokes, sitting here with a mug of tea writing about it: maybe that’s when my heart gets to express its true thanks. Even if I can’t quite find the right words.
Hopefully everyday I can let those around me know I am so glad that they’re in my life. That I am so glad they brighten my day, make me laugh, hug me, and sometimes, when the mood is right…talk about the deeper things in life, and how thankful we are for each other. For family, friends, and faith.

and gluten-free Mile High Pecan Pumpkin Pie, of course.
Duh.
xo!

Look Like Kate

{This is my “Kate is always smiling and walking in all of the paparazzi pictures, so I will be too” photo}
So this is sort of my “Halloween costume”. I’m not really a huge fan of Halloween, but I wore this outfit today, and I put it together inspired by Princess Kate. As soon as I spotted this dress in the thrift store, I knew it had to be mine. Lucky for me, it happens to be a London brand! Kate is bringing sheer hose back in style, but the only ones I had have flowers up the sides, hehe. An older lady who saw me went crazy over these hose and insisted I show them off in the pictures, so I did:
Kate has some very similar Stewart Weitzman cork wedge heels, so I wore my patent and rattan wedges. She often wears belts, too, and the hat is so similar to her brown one from the Canadian tour! I wore my best pearl studs, and tried my hardest to curl my hair.
Her hair is so utterly enviable! Gah! My hair hardly holds a curl. Here’s how it looked at the beginning, the best it looked after all of my 30 minutes of effort:

Here are a few of the dresses/outfits that inspired me:
I feel like Kate wore a dress even more similar to mine at some point, but I couldn’t find a picture of it.
Anyway, I adore, adore, adore this outfit, and can’t wait to wear the dress again!
Have fun but be safe and smart tonight, friends!
PS. Yes, the dress fits fingertip rule!

Falling

This city has yet to really impress me.

But this weekend…well…I might be falling for it a little bit.
See, I realized something.

This city owes me nothing. In fact, it has no idea who I am. It won’t draw my name out of a hat and invite me to hold the golden key to the city.
I must fall for it.
I must find the moments and the places that make me come alive here. I must find the space I wish to inhabit within this city, and I must inhabit it.
No one else can give that to me.
I have to thrift it along with vintage clothes, write it at coffee shops along with poems, and I must embrace it along with my family.
In time, I will snowshoe along the banks of its frozen lakes, and I will think quietly in my heart:
I have found peace.
And I have found a place here.

Fall Textures

It felt like Autumn today.
So I broke out my new little fall sweater (new = 25 cents from tag sale!) and paired it with some classy patent pumps for a texture swtich. These pumps have a rattan heel, which I thought matched the texture of the sweater nicely.

And I don’t really have much else to say except I’m tired.

So I’m going to have some coffee and get to work on business plans.
Sounds good-ish, right?
{trying to pep-talk myself, ha}
Have a good one!

Happiness

Gosh vacation makes me feel so happy.
Mint green makes me feel so happy.
Family makes me feel so happy & loved.
Coffee definitely makes me feel happy.
Doesn’t it feel good to be happy?
To feel loved, happy, and free inside your heart?
You know what I mean?
For such a long time, I didn’t know what that freedom inside my heart felt like, even though I still thought I was “happy”.

But freedom? It feels different from happy. It is this amazing mix of calmness from such a deep well, and this utter freedom to explore and dream and do and love…to shine for Christ…nothing holding you back inside your heart.

It’s utterly stunning to experience.
And it’s only from Christ that I can ever say I feel freedom in my heart.
Only, ever, always Jesus.
Words for my heart:
Words for your heart:
Let your love, God, shape my life
with salvation, exactly as you promised;
Then I’ll be able to stand up to mockery
because I trusted your Word
Don’t ever deprive me of truth, not ever-
your commandments are what I depend on.
Oh, I’ll guard with my life what you’ve revealed to me,
guard it now, guard it ever;
and I’ll stride freely through wide open spaces
as I look for your truth and wisdom;
Then I’ll tell the world what I find,
speak out boldly in public, unembarrassed.
I cherish your commandments-oh, how I love them!
relishing every fragment of your counsel.
Psalm 119:41-48
{the message}
These words, my dear ones.
Let these words soak your spirit in healing and encouragement.

There’s not much more I can say, because those words feel so weighty and yet so weightless to my heart tonight.

Red, White, Blue, Lace, Zebra

I’m such a sucker for dressing for holidays. And sometimes kitschy is fun, too, but I think it’s great to dress for the occasion a bit more subtly. I’m still wearing red (bangles & vintage earrings), white (dress, first day of the season to wear it…mixed with cream), and blue (ice blue eyeliner), but I don’t think the outfit screams, “Walking American flag.” I like to save that for the Fourth of July 😉
The zebra heels are a fun surprise element to this vintage shift dress, and with the rattan heels, are so summery. First Heidi braids of the season, and with bangs, too! Love it so much.
It was so funny because I spent the rest of the day adventuring, and it seemed everywhere I stopped people loved this dress! I say that because when my mom was visiting a month ago, and we were cleaning out my closet, she put this in my “donate” pile. Mom, I think I’m going to keep it, sorry 🙂
Another huge THANK YOU to all families, past & present, who carry the burden of their loved ones’ sacrifices for our country. Thank you. We will miss them, honor them, and never forget.
Have a GREAT week!

Sunlight in November

The sunlight in autumn just gets me. It is so incredibly gorgeous—but we must take delight in its temporality, for it is dark before dinner time, and for many months. We cannot get mad–sometimes, we, too, say goodbyes before we should. Sometimes we tuck into bed a little too early. Sometimes we wish the days away. No, we cannot be angry with the sun for hiding away from us for a bit.
For some reason, the warmth of the sun on my hair makes me think of bittersweet things, like sunlight in late autumn.
But no matter. I’m rather fond of this outfit. Can you ever imagine why? The color, of course! I just love it! The sheerness of the silk blouse and the sunlight–gah! Lovely.
