Wearing Skirts & Tights in Winter {Updated Version}

{heavy materials, layers underneath, tights, flannel heels}
Layer your dress: A heavy-duty red material, layered with a chambray shirt makes sure this ensemble stays cozy.
{Merino cardigan, heavy dress, merino tights, Hunter boots}
Layer with Merino Wool: Layer over it with a merino wool sweater and merino wool tights.
{Velvet skirt, layered top, Bootights, Shearling-lined boots}
Discover Bootights: LOVE these tights with a sock attached. They are made in USA, high-quality, durable, and have a sock attached.
Find fleece, silk, or cotton tights and leggings: {wool tulip skirt, fleece-lined running tights, high boots, chambray shirt}
Choose Appropriate Dress Materials: Heavy vintage silk, velvet, and wool are all great choices. If you are wearing a lighter-weight dress, be sure the colors say “winter.”
Add lots of layers and color!

You can even do fancy in the winter without being freezing! These tights are a great find (Target, of course!) and pair perfectly with a heavy silk vintage dress ($10 from the ‘needs work’ bin at my favorite vintage store…and I’m happy to work on pretty vintage dresses!). Then I wore my bright red wool coat.

{Dress, merino wool sweater, sweater tights, suede pumps}
I hope this gives you some ideas as we face these last dregs of winter!
Be well and be warm!

Weekend-ing

Casual weekend duds.

Neutrals with a pop of color in the form of hot pink jeans and hot pink earrings.

I’m in love with these stretchy, no-snag hairbands that also look great on your wrist when not in use. I am always getting comments because I wear an ugly hair band around my wrist at all times. Funny story: In my brother’s wedding, I had one on my wrist in ALL of the bridesmaid pictures, and into the wedding. When I looked down during the prayer and noticed it was there, I took it off and threw it into the grass while everyone had their heads bowed.
If only I’d had a cute one!!

 Here’s my pink and gold sparkly one (I made them):

Have a great week!

Casual Day

Just a casual errand-running outfit today. I just love a day when you can bundle up in a bunch of layers, but you don’t need ALL the layers, you know? No hat, thick mittens, and down coat required. It is so much easier to run errands without needing all of those, which you desperately want to shed when you’re inside the warm store.

So for a run to the DMV, thrift store, coffee shop, grocery store, and the library, this outfit works so well.
Handwarmers can be thrown in my purse, and the vest isn’t overwhelmingly warm. Add a Chai Tea Latte in hand and I’m perfectly cozy.
And now I’m crazy-inspired, so I’m off to work on Christmas presents!

Go-Getter

Some days, you have to get up, get dressed, and go make something happen.

Or, at the very least, get a cup of coffee in a hot pink cup that really makes you smile.

And by “get dressed” I mean…borrow clothes from my mom. Let’s not discuss how much I want to “permanently borrow” this gingham shirt of hers.

I have to say, I had a really great day while wearing this outfit, and while I didn’t necessarily “go get” anything super awesome today, at least I tried. Points, right?

Look Like Kate

{This is my “Kate is always smiling and walking in all of the paparazzi pictures, so I will be too” photo}
So this is sort of my “Halloween costume”. I’m not really a huge fan of Halloween, but I wore this outfit today, and I put it together inspired by Princess Kate. As soon as I spotted this dress in the thrift store, I knew it had to be mine. Lucky for me, it happens to be a London brand! Kate is bringing sheer hose back in style, but the only ones I had have flowers up the sides, hehe. An older lady who saw me went crazy over these hose and insisted I show them off in the pictures, so I did:
Kate has some very similar Stewart Weitzman cork wedge heels, so I wore my patent and rattan wedges. She often wears belts, too, and the hat is so similar to her brown one from the Canadian tour! I wore my best pearl studs, and tried my hardest to curl my hair.
Her hair is so utterly enviable! Gah! My hair hardly holds a curl. Here’s how it looked at the beginning, the best it looked after all of my 30 minutes of effort:

Here are a few of the dresses/outfits that inspired me:
I feel like Kate wore a dress even more similar to mine at some point, but I couldn’t find a picture of it.
Anyway, I adore, adore, adore this outfit, and can’t wait to wear the dress again!
Have fun but be safe and smart tonight, friends!
PS. Yes, the dress fits fingertip rule!

Take Heart

These days, it’s a daily struggle to keep all of my heart here. To keep it present.
Half of it is still living a small-town-happy past life, and the other half is living a city-struggling-memories life.

 I have so much more empathy now for anyone who moves. The next time a new girl comes up to me, I will say, “I will be your friend! I will sit with you at the lunch table! I mean, get coffee with you!”
{this section refuses to get on the ‘centered’ bandwagon tonight for some reason…}

Also, I have only unpacked about 20% of my closet, and I haven’t figured out this “why my hair looks so terrible here most days” thing yet, so I’m really limping along here with style posts. Good thing this blog isn’t just about fashion 🙂
PS> I had to wear this leopard coat because it was snowing. Again.
Wait for the Lord! Be strong, and TAKE HEART, and wait for the Lord.
Psalm 27:14
Have a great week!

Wearing Hats Part 4: Black Bow Hat

Hat Three: Black with Bow on Back
I was looking through old photographs last night.

Feeling really wonderfully nostalgic. The good kind of nostalgia. The happy-it-happened, weren’t-we-cute, wasn’t-the-world-lighter-then sort of nostalgia. The best kind.

I got excited to make more memories. I felt inspired: THIS is my one life. These days will soon be the memories. So I’d better snatch every beautiful thing I can!

God is still at work in my life, refining me little by little, sloughing off the rough edges and making me more like Him. But in the meantime, isn’t it a good feeling to be mostly content with where you’ve come from, and excited to see what’s around the next corner? I hope you feel that way, too, dears, I really do. I’m excited to see what God has planned.

Wearing Hats Part 3: Peach Petal Hat

Hat Number Two: Vintage Peach Petal Hat
Sometimes I wonder: Is this too much?

I wonder that with a lot of things. Flourishes in my handwriting, exclamation points in my typing, vintage-ness in my outfits?
I think:
 Oh, goodness, well, maybe I’m doing things wrong. Maybe it’s all just too much.
Maybe I need to get rid of flourishes, exclamation points, and vintage-ness.

Or, maybe, just maybe,
The real questions are:
Do I have enough love in my heart?
Light in my eyes?
Happiness in the morning?
And when the answer to those questions are YES, the answers to the other questions are NO, because the flourishes/exclamation points/vintage-ness are outpourings of the love/light/happiness.
I think that’s a beautiful thing.

Friday “Morning”

Well, oops, it’s definitely smack-dab in the middle of the AFTERNOON now, instead of morning! A few things…
A good motto to keep in mind…I so need this right now!
Mmmm….treat yourself to a beautiful lunch this weekend, full of good Spring things! I made some iced chai, local greens with strawberries, extra sharp cheddar, and raspberry vinaigrette; a raisin-cinnamon GF bagel with MAPLE CREAM CHEESE {super yum}, and a few stuffed grape leaves for good measure.
And get in some good exercise this weekend too! If you’re studying or otherwise need a break, I promise you that even some basic stretching or a quick walk will do wonders for your focus & energy! I’ve been doing yoga recently…just be sure to find a class that isn’t toooooo out there (mine plays classical music), and instead of chanting or meditating, I pray.

I usually wear a version of this to yoga. I I love the organic cotton yoga bras from Blue Canoe. Soooo comfy! Throw a cute, brightly colored cami on top. I picked up a Juicy Couture hoodie secondhand, and it’s great for yoga class. The AE yoga pants are my favorite so far—I love the cute fold-over contrasting waistbands they have! Pick a bright, cheerful yoga mat. I actually made my yoga bag–maybe I’ll do a tutorial on that someday! But grab one with some pockets and a spot for your water bottle, for sure! As you can see, I’m a sucker for hot pink 😉

And lastly, I tried my hand at a weekend playlist for ya’ll. Nothing too new/exciting, but some tunes I’ve been listening to…and what’s a playlist without some Taylor Swift? Am I right or am I right?!

I hope you have a beautiful weekend!

Orange & Blue

I got these orange jeans and was’t quite sure how to style them until I saw this picture. I just had to recreate this outfit as soon as possible! I’m so glad I did because this is one of my favorite outfits. It just felt really, really great to wear, and perfect for spring. You know those kinds of outfits? They really make the whole day seem better, don’t you think? Now I hardly want to take these orange jeans off. I’ve worn them twice so far, and just threw ’em in the wash, so I can’t wait to wear them again. I never would have thought in a million years that orange jeans would become my new favorite!
