April Snacks

April Snacks

April Snacks by fashionatalie on Polyvore

The things I can’t get enough of right now…oh MAN are they crazy-delicious! (cue SNL skit)

The older I get, the more important I realize snacking is for me…I just gotta have something with me that I can eat at a moment’s notice, and it’s gotta be gluten-free. Here are a few of my favorite new things:

1.) Cabot Greek Vanilla Bean Yogurt…This stuff looks & tastes like perfectly-melty vanilla bean ice cream. Amazing, amazing, amazing. Also, from Vermont, which gives it extra points.
2.) Carrot Cake LaraBars….I love discovering new LaraBar flavors, and this one is delicious with carrots and pineapple.
3.) Mom’s Best Cocoa Krispy Rice Cereal….With ice cold milk, it is the perfect late-night snack to satisfy a chocolate craving.
4.) Archer Farms Monster Trail Mix…This is always one of my favorite snacks. The addition of peanut butter chips somehow makes it.
5.) Noble Blood Orange Juice…Delicious and different!
6.) Glutino Apple-Cinnamon Toaster Pastries…Oh boy. I seriously have gone through at least half a dozen boxes of these in less than a month. I keep checking WholeFoods and they are almost always out of stock, so when I see them, I grab a few. The strawberry ones aren’t worth your money, but these? These are a combination of a pop-tart and a McDonald’s apple pie. Toasted heaven.

There ya have it! My delicious finds for April.

Swedish Snow Chocolate {with King Arthur Flour}

Oh my goodness. I’ve discovered something totally new to me: WHITE hot chocolate, and it’s amazing.

AND it’s Friday, which means a vlog. So let me break it down for you!
As my mom said, “It’s like liquid frosting.”
Can you think of anything better?
It’s thick, rich, and inspired by Sweden with almond, nutmeg, and pearl sugar.
Don’t get all late-winter-cynical on me, pining for beaches and the lake. Since it’s snowing beautifully out my window, and hopefully yours, I highly suggest you make this hot cocoa and settle in for the weekend. Spring will be here soon, and then you’ll wish you could find a snow drift to cool down in!
Next week there is still another baked goodie or two to share, and a few other fun things, so have a great weekend and I’ll see you next week, friends!
Swedish Snow Drift Hot Chocolate
by Good Girl Style
Makes 1 mug

1 1/2 cups milk
3 oz. white chocolate, chips or chopped finely
Splash vanilla
Whole or ground nutmeg
Whipped Cream
Whisk milk, chocolate chips, vanilla, almond extract, and a dash of nutmeg in a saucepan constantly until thoroughly combined and very hot. Serve very hot with whipped cream, another sprinkle of nutmeg, and Swedish Pearl Sugar on top.

New Nordic Ginger Chocolate Orange Brownies

This is the first of a few New Nordic recipes I’m creating in collaboration with King Arthur Flour. Brownies are all-American, but I’ve incorporated Scandinavian flavors of ginger, orange, and traditional Swedish pearl sugar. My friend who lives in Sweden says that these could also be baked in a round tin and called Kladdkaka, an unleavened chocolate cake with a gooey center. If you follow me on any social media platform (you totally should, I’m hysterical on Twitter and sappy on Facebook), you’ve seen me raving about these brownies. And discussing techniques for cleaning frosting off my keyboard.
Uffda. These brownies.
They are incredible.
They are rich, chocolatey, gooey but not underbaked, and they have a nice crunchy crust and firmer edges.
I honestly think they are the best brownies I’ve ever had, gluten-free or not.
The frosting?
It tastes exactly like a Terry’s Chocolate Orange.
Good enough to eat by the spoonful, followed by a gulp of ice-cold milk.
I think it’s the next “Nutella.”
As if Nutella would ever be “over.” But seriously.
The frosting recipe makes just enough extra for a few spoonfuls (I think of these things. Aren’t you glad we’re friends?).
If you didn’t watch the King Arthur Flour ingredients video, you might be thinking I’ve gone crazy and added giant crystals of kosher salt to my brownies. Fear not, it is actually Swedish Pearl Sugar! This texture switch really makes these brownies knock-out. The fudgy brownies, the whipped frosting, and the crunchy sugar. Orange, chocolate, ginger, and pearl sugar? A match made in New Nordic heaven.

New Nordic Brownies
{Ginger Chocolate Orange Brownies}

Fudgy Ginger Brownies

4 eggs
1 1/4 cups cocoa powder (Dutch-process preferred)
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. ground ginger
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
2 1/4 cups sugar
2 tsp. grated fresh ginger

Note: This is a unique technique, but don’t let it scare you off! It works, I promise!
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease or line with parchment paper a 9″x13″ pan. Beat the 4 eggs with the cocoa powder, salt, baking powder, and ground ginger. This will be a very thick concoction. Now, in a small saucepan, melt the butter and add the sugar. Heat until thoroughly hot but not simmering, being careful not to scorch the mixture. Combine the two mixtures, adding only a little of the hot butter to the egg mixture at first to temper the eggs. Then stir in the rest of the mixture. Stir in the flour and fresh ginger until just combined. Pour into prepared pan. Bake for approximately 30 minutes or until a cake tester comes out clean.
Chocolate-Orange Frosting (by Good Girl Style)
1 stick unsalted butter
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1/2 cup cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon Orange Oil from King Arthur Flour
2 Tbsp. milk
Swedish Pearl Sugar from King Arthur Flour
Beat the butter. Then sift in the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, and mix, scraping down sides frequently. Add the orange oil and the milk and beat until whipped.
Cut and frost brownies when cool, and sprinkle with Swedish Pearl Sugar.

Purse & Travel Essentials

Kleenex~Sephora Mini Brush/Mirror~Burts Bees Gloss, Tinted Lip Balm, and Pomegranate Lip Balm
~Victoria’s Secret Little Darling lotion~Hand Sanitizer~Moleskine Notebook~Business Card Case~Altoids~Tums Freshers~Card Case for Membership/Punch/Gift Cards~Pen~LaraBar~Kate Spade Wallet

Since it is winter now, these two babies are my absolute essentials: Lotion and hand sanitizer in the cutest, most useful little tube from HumanGear. When they shared a leash for Lottie, they also sent me two of their GoToobs, the civilized travel tube. So I just have to tell you about them for a minute here because they are awesome!
{Medium and Small GoToobs}

These beautiful, silicone tubes are so intuitively designed, they are sure to make travelling a much smoother experience. When I saw they were recommended by my favorite travel expert (the adorably pregnant-with-twins Samantha Brown), I knew I had to try them out.

What makes their tubes so fantastic? To begin with, they are squeezable. If you’ve ever had cheap “travel section at big box store” plastic containers for travel, you know that they are rigid and prone to leaking. And forget about ever cleaning all of your lotion outta there! Let’s be honest, you usually end up throwing them away after a trip because they are so inconvenient, right? No longer! These GoToobs make a great gift for yourself or any intrepid traveler. They’ll love you forever, I’m pretty sure. And I do mean forever, since GoToob offers a lifetime warranty on their products.
Look how pretty they are! Love the pink, orange and clear. They also come in blue/green/clear, all in 3 sizes (Small – 1.25 fl. oz., Medium – 2.0 fl. oz., and Large – 3.0 fl. oz.). They have a no-drip valve, a wide opening so you can get in there to really clean it out and reuse it, a special built-in labeling system so you’ll never put body wash in your hair again, the medium size has a suction cup to stick to the shower (!), and they are all BPA- and PC-free and FOOD GRADE. So you could put your special barbeque sauce in one to bring it camping. You could use it for toothpaste, then conditioner, and then you could use it for spicy mustard! I mean, it’s just so cool.

The medium, filled with shampoo, easily attaches to the shower wall via the built-in suction cup.

Ready & waiting for my next trip!
What are your purse or travel must-haves?

*Thanks to Katrin at HumanGear for her awesome customer service and for providing me with these products for review. This post is my honest and unbiased opinion.

Matching My Dog

Sometimes apparently I run out of pose ideas so I start to dance like Elaine from Seinfeld. This doesn’t surprise me. Does it surprise you? Didn’t think so.

Or maybe I’m just excited because Lottie got a new collar, leash, and sweater! Lottie is my family dog, the sweetest of sweetie pies. A real darlin’, that girl is. This Christmas she got a new red collar and my grandma knit her this adorable sweater. Lottie has never lived where there are major snowstorms, so she absolutely loves her cozy new outerwear. She also got this fancy new leash.

{which matches my outfit}

This leash is the real deal. Made by PAWW, a sister company of HumanGear, it is high-tech and human-savvy. The workmanship is stellar, and the leash is made out of double rip-stop nylon (often used in mountaineering equipment), which means if you were lost in the wilderness and needed to go all Bear Grills for some reason, you’d want this leash with you. It’s that tough.
Obviously, I’m not recommending you use this leash in any sort of mountaineering, other than taking your dog on a nice long walk in the woods.
Dogs dig that sort of thing.
And with the Paww Pick Pocket Leash, you will too. This intuitive, “civilized” leash keeps your doggie necessities right at hand. There is a built-in bag dispenser for doggy bags, and a zippered pocket for cash, a key, or better yet, a treat for your pup. The top clips around a post if you need to leave your pooch outside for a quick run to the store. There is a handy “utility loop” on the top that can be used to attach a flashlight, a used doggie bag, a toy, or whatever else you need to bring to the dog park or on that walk in the woods.

Lottie loves this leash.
My only complaint with this leash is that we were taught in our dog’s fancy training classes to always hold the leash with two hands, one wrapped around the leash and one farther down (that’s hard to describe in words). The high pocket placement makes it a bit hard to hold the leash in this manner. I think it might be nice to have the pocket closer to the collar, or perhaps adjustable. But we haven’t stopped using this leash on account of that….no way!
It’s clear with one look at this leash that it is the gear of choice for dogs and their owners who appreciate style and practicality. This leash means business.
It also means “extra long walks for Lottie.”
So it’s pretty win-win.
Many thanks to Katrin from Paww/HumanGear for letting me review their great products! This is my honest opinion in my own words.
